Description
c1891 John Gilbert of Birmingham, silver plated grape scissors. These antique silver-plated scissors are eye-catching. The undulating snake handles end at a grape cluster motif on the tension screw. On the back of the screw, there are four hallmarks: "J.G." (for John Gilbert, the silversmith), "A1" (for the highest quality of silver-plated flatware), a triangle with a cross (indicating British Government property) and the date stamp “R” for 1891. Grape scissors are specialized dining utensils designed to cut small clusters of grapes from larger bunches at a table. They were popular in Victorian times and are still used today, primarily for formal dining settings. They are not intended for cutting thicker grape stalks.
