For Sale: The Daan – A Classic Dutch Barge with Modern Comforts Step aboard The Daan, one of the most charming and characterful vessels on Irish waters. This beautifully restored 100-year-old Dutch barge combines traditional craftsmanship with modern amenities, lovingly refurbished by its current owners. Measuring 13 metres in length and 3.2 metres in width, The Daan offers surprisingly spacious accommodation, including four comfortable berths split between a private cabin and a cleverly designed convertible galley area. Rare for a vessel of this size, the galley boasts generous headroom and large picture windows that flood the space with light and offer sweeping views of the water. Onboard facilities include a toilet and a recently tiled shower powered by a gas boiler, which also provides hot water to the kitchen. The heart of the galley is a compact Stanley solid-fuel pot stove, creating a warm and cosy atmosphere throughout. The vessel is powered by a 2.8-litre diesel Ford Dorset engine, freshly reconditioned in preparation for sale. Its propeller was expertly repurposed in 2020 to ensure optimal performance tailored to the barge’s size and needs. The Daan is equipped with a top-of-the-line solar power system, featuring a Victron Energy Charge Controller and SmartShunt, allowing for real-time monitoring of battery charging via a mobile app. The wheelhouse has custom-made canopies by Jill Parkinson and Giles Byford, a newly resurfaced deck using high-grade marine flooring, and bespoke hardwood seating crafted by a master carpenter. The steel frame is in very good condition. The woodwork of the wheelhouse, however, needs attention and this is reflected in the price. Our plan was to replace it and while not strictly necessary, this is an option for the new owners.
