Its a line I regularly hear from farmers-"the cheapest job you will get done all year is pre scanning the cows". Two cows calving three weeks earlier will roughly pay for a 100 cow scan so it clearly makes sense. Cystic cows,womb infections,uterine scars etc all impair a cows ability to go incalf. If these problems can be identified early it will give a cow every chance to get back incalf during the short breeding window. Whether full herd scans or selecting potential problem animals its money well spent especially in such a challenging spring where cows nutrition has unfortunately been so compromised due to weather.
