Description
DESCRIPTION c. 1900s, American, cold painted cast iron statue with lantern ring, on iron pedestal set with mounting brackets, 47"h. Plumbed for electric light. Almost all of the remaining original 1875-1913 cast iron lawn jocks of this design were melted during World War II metal recycling drives. They are extremely rare (and valuable) today. There are only a couple in Ireland. CONDITION Good. Slight paint peeling. Beautiful piece. A very rare 19th Century cast iron equine hitching post in the form of a jockey. The jockey is classically dressed in the 19th century riding attire, comprising of a black riding hat, jacket and jodhpurs. The jockey is poised on a moulded plinth base, with one arm raised, holding out a stirrup for use as a hitching post for tying up horses for grooming. This lawn jockey was at the gate of Santa Anita Race Track in California from 1967 to 1994 Dimensions: H: 49 in / 124.5 cm W: 16 in / 40.6 cm.
