Rare cultivar of yellow stemmed bamboo rooted cuttings Galway/Kilkenny

Phyllostachys aureosulcata f. aureocaulis has the ability to revolutionise a garden, the emotions evoked and sometimes, an ideal solution to possible garden woes, such as, privacy issues. Grown for their long straight yellow stems or culms reaching up to 5 meters. I have planted them in high acidic, thin and stones soils of Galway. I have also planted them in heavy loam, high alkaline soils. Connemara did best although the leaves to get a battering. These plants like water, but will not respond well to sitting in water. Well drained soils, rich in organic matter, is an essential foundation for this plant. A member of the grass family this bamboo is as an excellent, instant, unimposing, screen. Aureocaulis provides privacy and a sanctuary to share a moment in its protection. This plant exudes class, elegance and good taste. Used as a specimen, hedging or group planting. ‘Aureocaulis’ can be quite tolerant of many conditions, including extreme winds and temperatures, yet unforgiving in drought. Therefore, I tend avoid planting in pots. Bamboos are be divided into two groups, clump root system and runners. The latter being so called due to underground no rhizome growing in horizontally to the soil surface. Runners were the causes of bamboos being rejected as an amenity plant due the plant running under the ground pushing up shoots in an invasive manner. Many Bots students were kept busy with ‘nixers’ removing running bamboos from the gardens of Dublin between the 70s and 90s. Always, there are exceptions to general rules and this is one cultivar. However,I would avoid planting in an enclosed, soil rich, south-facing aspect. Avoid an exposed site, just don’t spoil them, as It may become an issue! However, fear not! If allowed to run wild, covering acres of land, a 10 L pot with one main culm retails in Ireland at €50-€80. 🙂 You will receive a cutting at least 3/6 cm long with roots, cleaned, organically processed immediately addressing fungi, insects also induced with natural hormones including Salicylic Acid sourced from the park of Salix alba.
